Feel Powerless to Create Lasting Change? Need a Holistic Health Strategy? Consider Wellness Coaching.

As part of our continuing effort to be as holistic as possible we are proud to now offer another unique service here in Arlington and Alexandria, VA - Wellness Coaching, also known as Health Coaching.

What is Wellness Coaching?
In short, Wellness Coaching is a personalized, one-on-one relationship that helps individuals understand and walk through the process of making positive changes in their health.

Why Wellness Coaching?
If you are unhappy with the current state of your health, then it's a pretty safe bet there are some things that need to change. In all likelihood you already have a sense of what changes are in order (thus why you're reading this in the first place), but it is also possible that there are some important and necessary changes you are unaware of (probably also a reason you are reading this). In keeping with our philosophy, our type of Wellness Coaching is holistic and personal. It is our way to help you zoom out and observe the big picture of possible areas where you could facilitate change and then zoom in on the areas are you most interested in changing. By bringing some critical thinking and action planning into your wellness strategy, Wellness Coaching is often the link between the other services we offer and the results you are looking for. It will help assure that the changes you seek don't elude you. Here is what makes Wellness Coaching so valuable:

Benefits of Wellness Coaching:

  • Faster Results - A good coach can give you the foresight to fuel and accelerate the process of change and get on with the life you want to live-sooner. A wellness coach can help you condense decade's worth of learning into a matter of hours. Talk about a return on investment!
  • Outside Perspective - Sometimes the changes we need to make are not immediately obvious to us, and having a coach as a sounding board to help sort truths from fads can be extremely valuable.
  • Accountability - We are creatures of habit and we sometimes gravitate toward what is easy and familiar rather than what is good for us. A good coach can help you see those patterns and be accountable to change them.
  • Realistic Goal Setting - By getting to know you and what motivates you, a coach can have the perspective to help you figure out what changes are reasonable and which ones are likely to be too much too soon.
  • Confidence - What would it be worth to you to develop a holistic wellness strategy that gives you the resources to live your life knowing your health won't slow you down? What would it mean to you to pass that knowledge along to your loved ones? Or perhaps a better question is "what would your life look like if you didn't learn those things?"
  • Spending Money More Wisely - Few things in life are more precious than your health, so it makes sense that investing in your health is one of the best investments you could make. The reality is that in your lifetime you will spend a great deal of money on your health. Everyone will. The difference a good coach makes is where you will spend that money--on wellness and prevention, or on illness and treatment. In the latter instance you will almost always end up spending more.

Janet Witucki, Wellness Coach

We strongly encourage (although we don't require) all new coaching clients to thoughtfully work through the Wellness Inventory, a multi-faceted snapshot of your current level of health. This tool gives you and your coach the springboard to help you discover what areas of your health could use the most work. That said, your coaching time is all about you, and if you'd prefer to skip the Wellness Inventory and begin discussing your goals right away that is totally up to you.

With or without the Wellness Inventory your first coaching session lasts roughly 90 minutes and is an opportunity for you and your coach to brainstorm, ask powerful questions, and set action steps that will move you forward. Since each person is unique, one person's coaching may look entirely different than another's, but the overall goal is to help you see yourself as resourceful, creative and whole-essentially to see and grow into the potential you have inside you.

After the initial coaching session, our follow-up coaching consists of twice monthly sessions designed to work through the cycle of continuous improvement. Each session will start with a recap of the time since last session, a brainstorming session for what is ahead, and further action steps put in place based on recent successes and challenges.

Follow-up coaching can last for 3 or 6 months with the option to continuing for as long as desired after the first round of coaching is completed.

A Bit About the Process of Change
Changing our life patterns can be one of the most difficult things we do. We aren't taught how to change in school and most of us have no idea how to tackle the change process. The fear of change is actually rooted in our brain's physiology. When this fear takes hold, it can prevent success, creativity, and change. Having a coach to help you bypass this fear response and make sustainable change has the power to help you reach your health and wellness goals. Having a coach who understands you, who can brainstorm with you and ask you powerful, open-ended questions can help you clearly see and embrace the changes you need to make. In that sense, Wellness Coaching may truly be the most valuable service we offer.

In the final analysis, none of us are really very different when it comes to our health. Sure we all have likes and dislikes, our unique set of genes and our unique life situations, but at the end of the day we all need sleep, none of us are immune to the effects of stress, we all need exercise of some sort, we all need water, we all have basic nutritional needs, and our mindset about life affects our health. Despite these fundamentals, it is not an uncommon story for some people to use our services with tremendous benefit and for others to use our services and not see as much change in their life as they were hoping for. Why? The main reason is that the process of change can be quite different from one person to another. The more you understand about that process the better your results will be and where it could be argued that teaming up with a coach to develop a master-plan can help you not spend money chasing after wellness services that don't meet your biggest needs. The area(s) where you need to make changes may be totally different from what you were expecting. Why not let us help you figure that out?
